"Melanie Hubbard's some kind of word wizard, some kind of one of a kind word collector. She shows up with language aglow and growing, expanding when it seems to begin tiny, shrinking when it begins colossally. Sometimes one is invited to spend a good long while wondering over her combinations. Her poems, taken together, can read like a whacky novel, the story a dictionary would write were it so inclined. She's smart and quick with an imagination that never quits." --Dara Wier

Dear Diary,
______What I like about you is how accurately your symptoms follow your disease.

Carry my work belt and I’ll hold your war pelt.
One at a time all things are either difficult
or difficult to understand. For now, let logic
be the engine that tears off the plane you're on
and rips open the psych ward in the hospital
Peter hanged in. In your new classroom,
after you survive, bring a screwdriver and a hammer.
Chip off those petrified pieces of bubble gum
and when they are scattered on the stained linoleum tiles
make a loose fist use a deep voice mutter something
about the globs of the modern. Peter would have loved
just that. He would have pitied you and worn a hood
but he would have loved you just the same.

Fatalism

when we turn off the lights in this house

what is left in the absence of light

is a wandering

& decimated tribe of gods—

—& now the anodynic kneel when I wash my face alone—the coward’s hour

you lie asleep like a body of water I thought I had discovered

a mirror that holds my form—

nine crows yonder rouse & spread outward
—away from us

the sky cleareth
